Sailing from Punta Arenas!

Customs officials are on board now and as soon they disembark we will sail. The NBP has been in port for a little over a week and so much has happened to get ready for this cruise, during this time as well as over the last year. Personnel from ECO, the ship's operators, and RPSC, the science support company, have all been busy. But especially busy has been the Seacore crew. They have been hired for the SHALDRIL cruise and are responsible for operating the drill rig and getting the core we are all anticipating. The rig is certainly tall, as we all expected, but an even more overwhelming change to the vessel is that every square inch of the back deck is full. Today's photo shows the rig as it was being mounted on board. Over the next several days we will send more photos and more details explaining how things will work on this cruise. Right now we are still settling into things and getting our sea legs.

Until then, Julia Smith Wellner
